What has change meant in the past? How has change impacted an individual in previous situations? What is the individual’s understanding of the change and why it is happening? CONSULTATION
It is natural for conflict and discontent to exist in work environments. Oftentimes, these are the catalysts for continuous quality improvement efforts and change to take place. However, when there are no opportunities to explore and understand the conflict or discontent with the change, frustration can build, and blame is projected outwards onto individuals or groups of individuals. Human nature leads to quickly assigning blame to the other, and this approach jeopardizes an organization’s ability to function with unity and may even influence how external partners or potential “customers” are treated or view the organization. The tendency is to hurry to fix the problem and it often means the solution may only be effective for a short time, if at all.
The time it takes to really understand the dynamics of a situation and address the root cause of the issues is more likely to occur when those involved are provided with an opportunity to become aware of and acknowledge their contribution to the outcome they are experiencing. This opportunity is made available through group coaching by encouraging curiosity around what is happening rather than certainty about a solution.
